Amy
I grew up in central Wisconsin and followed my passion for teaching to Minnesota, landing my dream job at Northfield High School. For the past 20 years, Saint Paul has been my family's home, and I've truly embraced the close-knit community of this awesome, diverse city. Coming from a family of teachers, my educational journey includes a B.A. in 7-12 English Teaching from the University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse, an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from Saint Mary’s University - Winona, and a K-12 Administrator’s License from Hamline University. Additionally, I've been trained in Mindfulness Instruction for K-12 schools and have participated in summer institutes with the Minnesota Writing Project. All of this informs my approach to creating a supportive, focused, and rigorous learning environment.
I firmly believe that all students possess the capacity for high-level learning. I take the time to understand your individual needs, interests, and experiences, tailoring my instruction to topics that you are passionate about, because our time together should be both effective and enjoyable! Whether in a traditional classroom or a one-on-one tutoring session, I recognize that every learner is unique, and my instruction will be just as individualized to meet you where you are.
Over the past 32 years, I've had the privilege of teaching English for all high school grade levels in a variety of learning environments: traditional high school, online school, and an alternative learning center. I also developed and taught "Foundations of Writing and Rhetoric - Composition 101" through Minnesota State University - Mankato, where students received dual credit for the class. Furthermore, I spent a decade as Northfield’s Curriculum and Staff Development Coordinator, where I led all subject and grade level teams through the curriculum review process and provided leadership and planning for all district staff development. Currently, I am supervising teacher candidates in the Education Department at Saint Thomas University. My tutoring experience spans middle and high school students, providing both enrichment and targeted support, as well as focused ACT/SAT preparation. Because I deeply value differentiated instruction in all learning environments, I have extensive experience successfully guiding students and educators through personalized one-on-one conferences where I help them set and achieve their goals for improvement.
At Kay Tutoring, I am available to provide support for ACT English/Reading and SAT/PSAT Reading and Writing as well as English Language Arts support and executive functioning coaching. Whatever your goals are, I'm excited to partner with you! And, while I love my content area, my favorite part about tutoring is getting to know you and watching you achieve your goals!
When I'm not immersed in the world of language and learning, I enjoy tending my garden, catching movies and plays, and enthusiastically cheering on Minnesota sports teams – especially the Vikings, for whom I proudly hold season tickets!
